ABOUT
Suicide notes are popular pieces of evidence, often conceptualized as a fast track to certifying unnatural deaths as suicides. Despite their popularity, suicide notes are only recovered in a minority of scene responses. Complicating matters further, these notes are sometimes found at scenes that are ultimately not suicides. This course aims to guide students through the wide, and evolving world of the suicide note, focusing on the variability of these messages, not just in scene findings, but form and content as well. After completing this course, you'll be able to: 🟡 Differentiate between suicide notes and ideation, according to national standards (CDC). 🟡 Identify the role suicide notes play in certifying death, both positive and negative. 🟡 Avoid misconceptions regarding the frequency of note recovery on scenes. 🟡 Anticipate locations of recovery, from secondary scenes to the decedent, themselves. 🟡 Illustrate the common components of a suicide note. 🟡 Recognize the variations of digital notes, from text messages to social media. 🟡 Gain awareness on the world of cybersuicide, including livestreaming fatal injuries. 🟡 Determine if there is a difference between those who do and do not leave notes. 🟡 Identify the evidentiary steps necessary to distinguish genuine and fake notes.
